Question – Discuss in brief, the distribution of employment in different sectors of economy on the basis of gender
Answer –
- Primary sector is the major source of employment for both male and females. About 57.1% of the female workforce and 40.7% of the male workforce are engaged in the primary sector and depend on it for their livelihood.
- Tertiary sector is the next/ second major source of employment and accounts for 32.8% of the male workforce and 25.2% of the female workforce.
- Secondary sector employs only 26.5% of the male workforce and 17.7% of the female workforce.
Number of female workforce is more in Primary sector because:
- Men get more opportunities in both secondary and tertiary sectors.
- Lack of mobility among females due to family as well as social constraints. They prefer to work at their place of residence even at a low wage rate.
- Poverty force/ compels women to do work as casual workers on the farm and field of others.
