Question – Discuss the distribution of employment on the basis of gender

Answer –

1. In India, self-employment is a significant source of livelihood for both male and female because of:

  • A low literacy rate implies the low acquisition of skills for wage/hired employment.
  • Lack of mobility due to the diverse social environment.
  • Less generation of wage employment in India.

2. Among women, self-employment is a more significant source of livelihood.

Reasons:

  • Owing to family and social constraints, the mobility of women workers in search of jobs remains low.
  • In rural areas. ample opportunities of self-employment for women and they are engaged in traditional jobs like spinning, weaving, dyeing, bleaching etc.

3. In regular salaried employment, the proportion for male is 24% whereas female accounts for only 21% because regular salaried employment/jobs require skills and a higher level of literacy. So, women might not have been engaged to a great extent.

4. In casual wage labourers, the proportion for male is 24% whereas females account for nearly 27%. The ratio of women workforce is high, this is because their level of education and skills is low and they are ready to work even at low wages.
